Lilley started Modern Railings & Metalcraft Ltd. and began selling porch railings door to door, as a sideline from his tool and die making business. In 1967, his son Kenneth took the reins and helped move the company in a new direction by focusing on miscellaneous and custom metal fabrications, architectural metals and light structural steel. In 2008, the company built a new office and fabrication plant in Aurora, Ontario. The company's new plant encompasses almost 50,000 square feet and includes a new modern blast cleaning machine and painting facility, along with a separate enclosed area for working with stainless steel and aluminum materials. The company's shop and field employees are members of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers.
