The Compass Day Treatment Program (COMPASS) is a joint service delivered by Lynwood Charlton Centre and the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB). The program provides integrated treatment and educational service to 16-20 students between the ages of 13 and 18 years. This co-educational program is designed to serve a core group of sixtee... n (16) students and a maximum o f four (4) additional students who receive transitional supports. During the summer months the service provides therapeutic and recreational programming two (2) days per week and continues to maintain individual and parenting support contact with participant youth and their families. Youth eligible for the day treatment program are those whose histories of serious social, emotional and mental health/ psychiatric difficulties have interfered with their ability to function and progress within mainstream educational settings. Less intrusive interventions available through the education sector alone or in conjunction with community agencies will have been explored and exhausted. A defining feature of this population will be the presence of significantly interfering psychiatric and/or emotional challenges. The program operates 8:30 am - 2:30 pm during the school year from a self-contained and stand alone building located in a central Hamilton neighbourhood. Service is delivered by a Special Education Teacher and three (3) Child & Youth Workers with both consultative and direct support from the HWDSB, Special Education Department and Lynwood Charlton Centre. Specialized multidisciplinary clinical consultation service is available through Lynwood Charlton Centre protocols with McMaster Children's Hospital and COAST.
