Steve Thompson briefly played for the Texas Rangers under the legendary Bobby Ray Franklin during the 1982 National Championship season before a medical condition cut short his playing career. That injury influenced his desire to pursue a degree in the sports medicine field. Thompson went on to graduate from the University of Mississippi in 1990 wi... th a double major in sports medicine and secondary education. He started an internship at Ole Miss with all sports and then went to work for the team physician, Dr. Wayne T. Lamar PA, a group of orthopedic surgeons. Under that sports medicine outreach program, Thompson was assigned to Northwest Junior College in 1990 where he was the first certified athletic trainer. In 1991, Thompson took a job as the director of sports medicine at Baptist Hospital in Oxford and spent two years there. In 1993, he broke away and began his own private practice, and in 1997, he co-founded Cornerstone Rehabilitation along with Jennifer McGavock where hes been ever since. Originally from Water Valley, Thompson was an all-district and all-conference defensive back at Water Valley High School and also played a season at Northwest. His father, Jimbo Thompson, also played for the Rangers in 1962-63.
